Capoeira is very physical and what it lacks in actual usefulness it makes up for in the fitness rewards it gives... As well as losing weight your flexibility, speed, agility, cardiovascular and muscular endurance will be much greater after a while.

there are other martial arts that can make you lose weight fast too, like muay thai, taekwondo, maybe karate if the school is a hardcore one, like kyokushin.

Yeah Capoeira, if done hard, will certainly burn calories and fat. You'll need to watch your diet as well, but at 5'3 and 143lbs you don't need to be dropping a ton of weight very quickly, that is not big by any stretch of the imagination.

If you're planning on doing it more than a couple times a week and you're changing your diet up (like no fast food, no simple carbohydrates, etc.) then definitely.

A friend of mine practices Capoeira on the side and he had me go with him a few times. It's a definite calorie scorcher.
